OpenAI cuts flagship Sol API rates by up to a third

OpenAI is cutting API and credit pricing for GPT-5.6 Sol, its most powerful model, by more than 20 percent for the next three months. Sol now costs $4 per million input tokens, down from $5, and $20 per million output tokens, down from $30, a 33 percent reduction on output. The promotional pricing is guaranteed at least through November 21, 2026, and applies to Fast mode, long-context requests, and Batch and Flex processing.

The cuts follow last month's reductions across the rest of the GPT-5.6 family, with Terra down 20 percent and Luna down 80 percent, bringing Luna to just 20 cents per million input tokens. On OpenRouter the new Sol pricing stacks with an existing 50 percent discount, putting effective rates at $2 per million input and $10 per million output tokens.

The move intensifies the frontier price war just as the Financial Times reports that spending on Anthropic's flagship Fable 5 has plateaued at about 11 percent of corporate outlay on Anthropic tools, with businesses increasingly choosing cheaper models for everyday workloads. OpenAI's aggressive pricing, paired with GPT-5.6's strong reception, helped its annualised revenue jump 35 percent in the quarter to date to more than $40bn, setting up a bruising second half of 2026.
