Developers want Claude Code to read the emerging AGENTS.md standard, a single Markdown file that tells coding agents how a codebase works. Codex, Cursor and Amp are already standardizing on it.
Claude Code currently relies on its own CLAUDE.md file for project instructions. That works well inside Anthropic's ecosystem, but it breaks the growing multi-agent workflow where developers switch between tools depending on the task. A unified AGENTS.md means one set of instructions works across every agent, with no duplication and no drift between files.
For founders, this is the standardization moment for agentic development. Just as package.json and Dockerfiles settled the tooling wars of previous eras, AGENTS.md is shaping up to be the shared contract between humans and coding agents. If the big players converge, teams get portable, consistent agent behavior without locking themselves into a single vendor.
